Explanation

Cryptocurrency is currency created based on blockchain technology and digital technology.

According to the decision of the Selangor State Fatwa Committee meeting held on August 17, 2021, it was determined that it is permissible (harus) to engage in transactions using digital currencies, whether as a medium of payment, for money transfers (remittance),
or as a store of value.

Mata wang kripto dan aset digital adalah termasuk dalam kategori harta kerana ia mempunyai sifat ‘al-Mutaqawwim’ (mempunyai nilai) dan diwajibkan zakat berdasarkan dalil-dalil umum kewajipan zakat terhadap harta.
Cryptocurrency is not considered legal tender by Sharia or legal standards; however, it is categorized as an investment asset or security recognized by the Federal Government Gazette under the Ministry of Finance.
The obligation to pay zakat is not limited to cryptocurrency and digital assets traded on digital asset exchange platforms regulated by the Malaysian Securities Commission.

1. How is the calculation method for cryptocurrency zakat?

Method for Calculating Cryptocurrency Zaka

The formula: Units of cryptocurrency and digital assets x current price (at end of haul) x 2.5% = Total Zakat

Example: Mr. Ali owns 0.2 units of Bitcoin (BTC) which has met the haul requirement. The current price for 1 BTC is RM258,107.

The zakat amount Mr. Ali needs to pay for the year 2021 is:

0.2 units x RM258,107 x 2.5% = RM1,290.54

2. If there are many types of cryptocurrencies, how should it be handled?

[ Units of cryptocurrency and digital assets x current price (at end of haul) ]
Calculate for each cryptocurrency owned. Sum up the total

Total value of all cryptocurrencies owned x 2.5% = Total Zakat

Contoh : Encik Ahmad memiliki 0.3 unit BTC, 0.5 unit ETH dan yang telah mencukupi haul. Harga semasa 1 unit BTC adalah bersamaan RM344,116.91, 1 Unit ETH adalah bersamaan RM19,058.33 .

The zakat amount Mr. Ahmad needs to pay for the year 2024 is as follows:

BTC 0.3 unit x RM344,116.91 = RM103,235.075
ETH 0.5 unit x RM19,058.33 = RM9529.165

Total Amount = RM112,764.24

RM112,764.24 x 2.5% = RM2,819.11
